THE FIVE: BIGGEST MISTAKES MADE BY INCOMING NCAA STUDENT ATHLETES

First, nobody is perfect. As players start to make the transition from the youth and junior levels of play to college hockey, it’s very important to avoid mistakes that could easily cost any prospective student athlete an opportunity.

Today’s Five is our second such article on the subject. This one is short and to the point. That’s how we do Friday.

  1. Taking college classes before talking to compliance director or someone with knowledge of NCAA academics.
  2. Not taking the proper NCAA Core Courses while in high school. NCAA only cares about passing the sixteen core courses.
  3. Not registering with NCAA Eligibility Center.
  4. Not spending time keeping the brain in tune with proper study habits while playing junior hockey. Yes, those 22-year-olds need to start reading books and taking notes long before getting back into the classroom setting.
  5. Players that attended online high school need to be sure the school is compliant and not a scam.
