BEHIND THE BENCH

By Michael Moore

I FORGET

As a scout, I often find myself deeply engrossed in the intricacies of the game—analyzing players, dissecting systems, and critiquing every penalty kill. In this meticulous process, I sometimes forget to simply enjoy the game. The raw excitement, the unexpected twists, and the sheer determination of the players can be overshadowed by the constant analysis. Even if my favorite team were in the Finals, I’d likely overanalyze them too, despite my deep affection for them. It’s rare for me to truly savor the games until the title is clinched.

I need to get better at this. I need to remember why I started watching hockey in the first place. I need to recall the highs and lows, the promise and the uncertainty, and most importantly, I need to enjoy the experience. With my team not in this year’s Cup, I have the luxury of putting the analysis aside and just enjoying the ride. It’s refreshing to watch without having to “work.”

This week-long wait for the Finals to begin is tough, but Gary Bettman is adamant about not competing with the NBA for viewers. Nonetheless, this is one of those rare opportunities for me to appreciate the game and its players for what they are. The fact that it’s a Canadian team versus a US team adds another layer of excitement. Even if your team isn’t in it, take this opportunity to watch and enjoy our beloved sport at its pinnacle.
