The Vault: Beating the Odds

Let us go ahead and say this first, today’s article is not going to be necessarily about hockey. In fact, the only link to the game is in regard to my personal health and battle with a forever compromised immune system.

I am a survivor that battled stage III renal cell carcinoma almost literally to hell and back. A few months back we reached the nine-year mark of being cancer-free. That might not mean a lot to some people, the number has a lot of value to me. Every new day is also very important to the children, wife, family, and even close friends.

Back in the summer of 2014, I had lost my youngest children (ex-wife took them, but I got them back!) and was not able to communicate with the oldest pair. The will to continue the fight was almost lost as well. Just when it looked like the cancer won, a young doctor convinced me to take a chance on an aggressive immunotherapy treatment that was entirely experimental at that time. To say it nicely, we had nothing to lose.

It was a gruesome fight complete with daily injections, high fevers, and losing a significant amount of body mass. The physical differences were so severe that Sonia and Tomas did not recognize me after just seven weeks of treatment. Trust me folks, you will want to avoid the Big C weight loss plan.

But we won the fight.

I was warned about the likely side effects and have experienced more than our fair share of close calls since December 1, 2014. Trips to the hospital, on four different occasions, for heart problems is never going to be fun. Those high fevers took a toll on the ticker. The heart was weakened, but is still ticking, and even a bit stronger now in the last few years.

We married Deysi on March 1, 2016. I say we because that’s what happens when single parents marry a childless mother and that’s exactly what Deysi was. She’s a tiny Colombian fireball that cares and protects us like a puma protecting her cubs.

In the year between winning the fight with cancer and meeting Deysi, life was a miserable and snotty mess of getting over one cold and flu after another. Sometimes it felt like a flu could be caught from a person sneezing on TV. We ate bags of citrus, swallowed jars of vitamins, and grew frustrated time and time again. The kids were great, they never got sick but me, oh boy.

One of the first things Deysi installed into her ready-made family was a strict diet plan full of more fruits, vegetables, brown rice, latina beans, healthy meats (lots of seafood & chicken), and love. Deysi also started adding a supplement to my daily medicine regime after clearing it with the doctor.

I have now gone through seven flu seasons, and the COVID-19 pandemic, without getting seriously sick.  How? First of all, getting sick scares the heck out of me so unnecessary risks are avoided. Washing hands and constantly monitoring heart rate, blood pressure, and sugar is something I’ve been doing long before this COVID-19 thing started trending.

So, what is Deysi giving me?  It is called 4Life Transfer Factor Plus.  Because of our constant contact with people from all over the world, Deysi increased my dosage to eight tablets a day back in February of 2021 when the coronavirus started trending.

I can’t tell you that this supplement is the reason I’ve avoided the cold, flu, or even a serious COVID-19 case. Maybe it’s all the water, sunshine, walks, and happiness. Nine years of remission has a way of making any survivor smile.

No, I’m definitely not a scientist or any kind of health expert. This is just an old blueliner that can only speak from is his own personal experiences. I’m inviting you to take a few minutes to investigate the product on your own and maybe consult with your own physician.
